Methods & Data
Definitions. Weekly H.4.1 levels (Wednesday), sampled monthly: total assets (WALCL), overnight reverse-repo usage (RRPONTSYD), the Treasury General Account (WTREGEN) and reserve balances (WRESBAL), all in dollars (FRED publishes the H.4.1 levels in millions and reverse-repo usage in billions). Monthly readings begin in January 2003, because the weekly H.4.1 series begin in December 2002; the reverse-repo line begins in February 2003, its first month with a reading, and before the Fed's overnight reverse repo facility opened in September 2013 it records the Fed's occasional temporary operations. Reserves/GDP divides by the nominal GDP of the last quarter at or before each month — the ratio the "ample reserves" debate is conducted in. The ON RRP card reads "drained" below $50 billion and "parked cash" at or above it.
